I had been wondering why the long distance bills were up and when I came home unexpectantly, I found out. The parish cat, Miss Nottingham was on the phone talking with Siegfried and Anton, actually flirting was more like it. That is not so bad, but these cats are the Pope’s kitties, hidden away at the old apartment outside the Vatican. She was quite contrite, about the phone bills, and sought to make reparation with juicy gossip.
The cats are saying that on April 5th, the Holy Father is going to release his long-awaited motu proprio allowing universal use of the old Tridentine rite Mass. There is still a chance a few French mutts, as the cats call them, might throw a monkey-wrench into the whole business, but the cats think that this time it is for real!
Anton, the darker of the papal felines, says that the Pope has grown quite irritated about the whole matter and is including a strong explanatory epistle with the universal indult. Evidently, the Holy Father intended to release the old Mass from bondage last year about this time but he was surprised by the amount of resistance and gave everyone a year to discuss it. A year later his opponents are still unmoved but the Pope has had enough. Siegfried says that Pope Benedict XVII never thought the old Mass should be banned anyway.

Siegfried said he actually sat on the papal document and noted that it was completed and signed before the gentle Pope pushed him off the desk. Both cats rolled around on copies to be sent to the French bishops after hearing that most of them are allergic to cat dander. However, the Holy Father is unaware of their antics.
If cats are to be trusted, and in my experience that is a big “IF” then the issue of the old Mass has been decided.

Papal cat, Anton, added that Una Voce America and the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter has been given a heads up on the universal indult and that they are scheduling training classes to assist priests in celebrating the traditional Latin Mass. Classes will begin in June 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe seminary located in Denton, Nebraska. The three week-long workshops will cover the same pertinent information each week. Una Voce America will insure the funding and promotion of the workshops while the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter will offer the instruction.
The form of the traditional Latin Mass will be according to the 1962 Roman Missal. Fr. Calvin Goodwin, FSSP, is the contact for interested clergy. He says:
“Priests will learn not only how far to raise their hands and how to pronounce the Latin, for example, but how the various gestures and prayers fit into the liturgical prayer of the Church, and reflect the Faith itself. No prior experience with the traditional Mass is needed, and the course is open to all priests regardless of their level of Latin proficiency. In fact, our instructors are eager to work even with those priests who have no previous Latin training at all. It’s often difficult for priests to learn these things from a video or book in their spare time — they’re pulled in a thousand different directions in their parishes. Here at the seminary, without distractions, they will be able to ask questions and get the answers and encouragement they need.”

IS KITTY PLAYING AN APRIL FOOL JOKE ON US?
I SURE HOPE NOT!

Father,
This is such wonderful news. I have been reading endlessly all of the tidbits and rumours all aroundd the internet, but I have been waiting to see your comment. I just trust you. Period. Now that it seems to be for real, I am so ready.
Regarding the training workshops. Some advice if you please. I would love to broach the subject with my priest, but don’t want to seem like an extemist kook. My priest is a sweet, lovable man who I would never want to offend, or worse yet to anger. Is there a “best” way to approach him?? Am I being silly???
Also, I am QUITE surprised at the sourcing of this post. After your previous cat post, I would have thought that you would be Persona Non Grata in the cat-gossip world!!!!
This is news that I have been waiting to hear for 8 years. I had in a sense been “formed”, or informed at least, by a period of inquiry at an Orthodox Church in America mission in East Tennessee. It was the richness and depth of the liturgy that impressed me the most. It was clear to me that aside from and above any kind of catechesis or sermonizing, that this was the instrument of the transmission of the faith. Imagine how shocked, confused, and dejected I was when I determined that Orthodox claims against the Catholic Church, or Rome, were insubstantial and attended my first Catholic Mass–it was the current bishop’s ordination. I was so confused, and I thought to myself: “How do Catholics know their faith?” I determined that perhaps schooling or catechesis somehow supplied the lack, but even then I recognised that without the support which the expression of that faith in public worship provides, faith langours. Not to mention what is known to everyone as the familiar litany of complaints: sappy, uninspired music of questionable relation to Catholic spirituality or teaching; cheap looking vestments and altar dressing; communion in the hand; celebrating facing the congregation; “for all”; etc., etc. It was only then that I learned by talking to a priest and attending RCIA classes that the problem was much deeper. I became very discouraged and dejected searching around for what might be the appropriate response given the gravity of the circumstances, especially since I simply wanted to be Catholic and obtain the mercy and grace of the sacraments, but only in good conscience. I could not understand how the Church could or would undertake such a radical transformation without abandoning her identity altogether–or transmogrifying it into a cheap caricature of emasculated niceness. I knew that the reassertion of her identity had in some way to emanate from the seat of authority and include affirmation of that most holy and sanctified patrimony which is her tradition of public worship. May the glory of the Church be manifest in this, and a true renewal of the spiritual life and Christian witness enkindle the stubble littering our world; and I hope you will pray that I might find my home at last within the bosom of the Church.
Even PETA and Greenpeace are commenting on the Motu Proprio – sorry Father, but I must report your comment about the cat’s sacrificing a life to PETA immediately.
George,
Actually, I hope that the news you (and other Catholics in East Tennessee) may be looking for may be here …
http://www.knoxlatinmass.net/
… at the web site of the Knoxville Latin Mass Community and our indult (Tridentine) Mass in Knoxville. Give it a try this coming Easter Sunday (1:30) pm at St. John Neumann Church (Farragut) and you’ll find none of your “litany of familiar complaints” anywhere in sight. Or sound; follow the Choir and Music link to the Upcoming Masses page to see how different the music will be from what you’re likely to have experienced at a Catholic church recently. Look at the Photo Gallery (the Christmas page, for instance) if you’ll still concerned about those cheap-looking vestments, etc.

[...] Er, it’s maybe ready! says the Catholic News Service. The cat is out of the bag! purrs another Vatican source. [...]
APRIL FOOL!
I suspect the Holy Father may have gone jelly after the reactionary reactions of whats left of the novus ordo church in France, Germany Holland and Belgium. He was probably threatened with Schism by these renegade French prelates and clerics. So much for the Bugnini catholics telling Orthodox (Traditionalist Roman Catholics like The Society of St. Pius the 10th ) to OBEY. Not much is being said by the like minded novus ordo boys in Canada and the United States aka CCCB & USCCB. I guessing guru’s like Mahoney, Brown and more than a few of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Protestant Bishops will also rise up in defiance of any Motu Proprio liberating the Tridentine Divine Liturgy. The Pope might want to get one hell of a big broom and do some housecleaning. So much for the obedience of the post Vatican two novus ordo clerics.
ADDENDUM——– AND SO MUCH FOR THE UN-CATHOLIC CONCEPT OF THE CONSILIAR CHURCH BASED ON THE FORMAT OF THE SCHISMATIC EASTERN ORTHODOX PATRIARCHATES, IT DOESN’T WORK FOR THE ORTHODOX EAST AND WHY THE HELL WOULD IT WORK FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, WHICH BY THE WAY IS A MONARCHICAL SYSTEM NOT A FELONIOUS FORM OF MOCKRACY ERRRRRR DEMOCRACY??????????????????????
Too bad… my DOG is catholic
Maybe not your main interest here, but I’m on a quest to find out the Pope’s cats’ names. Are these veritable names here? My 7th and 8th grade students are competing to see who can find out first…
