FATHER MIKE KIDD, REST IN PEACE!

Father Michael Kidd passed away Sunday morning, just before 7:00 AM. Monday would have been his birthday. I saw him on Saturday at the Medical Intensive Care Wing at Doctor’s Hospital. Who knows how many times he was anointed and absolved of sin? Nevertheless, I offered the rites and prayers as well as the Litany of the Saints and the prayers for the dying. We made the announcement at the 9:30 AM and 12 Noon Masses. Viewing will be here at Holy Family Church on Wednesday (3 PM to 9 PM) with a vigil Mass at 7:30 PM. The funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM at St. Pius X in Bowie with internment at Gate of Heaven.

He was pastor of Holy Family Church in Mitchellville, Maryland for a quarter of a century. In retrospect, maybe it was fitting that he should go home to God on the Feast of the Holy Family? Our many parishioners mourn his passing. He was their spiritual father. He married their young people, baptized their babies, and buried their friends and family. He preached the Gospel and gave them the bread of life. He retired a couple of years ago and was assigned to St. Pius X in Bowie, Maryland. But, in many ways he left his mark and his heart at Holy Family. Rest in peace!

Okay, I went and did it again with a tricky question.  Most people will proably get 90% and some of these will vehemently disagree with me.  I will give a HINT:  The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen said that the moral situation between men and women will pretty much be what the women want it to be.  This might sound sexist, but he was convinced that if women said NO to improper advances, most guys would respect them and their boundaries.  Otherwise, boys will test boudaries, and often try to get away with as much as they can.  Women pay the highest price for sexual misconduct.  The introduction of the pill made many forget this.  The rise in venereal diseases is forcing a moral re-evaluation.  Of course, good Catholic morality is not simply based upon negative consequences and fear, but rather upon what is RIGHT and upon what GOD WANTS.

CATHOLIC SEX TEST (Adults Only!)

Boy, is she a cutie…NOT!  Hey, I am a celibate priest, and most days that seems pretty good by me.  Yes, it would be nice to have some one bring me soup when sick, and my slippers, and cook, and clean, and do the laundry and…well, as my dear mother used to say, “I am sure glad you are a priest, no woman in her right mind would have you!”  Probably true, but house-keepers are soooo expensive!

Here is a peculiar test I have put together, nothing scandalous, but about Catholic teachings on sex remarked about on this Blog before. 

HINT:  Some of the questions are TRICKY, particularly the divorce question which might go one of two ways.  The perspective of the question is not exactly what Jesus says (particularly in Matthew) but what is the case in Catholic practice.  Good luck!)

Kids I know are all excited about the latest dance sensation. Goodness me! I hear my friends in the White family are gearing up to dance like this into the New Year! Ah, they must be dancing fools… looks too much like exercise to me.

My view of dancing has always been more romantic, and because of that, well, I do not dance. But if I were not a priest and if I had to dance, well, give me the late Ginger Rogers…

Ginger sent me an autographed photograph from her home in Seattle just days before she passed away. She was something special. God bless her.

Oh well, I won’t dance… except in my dreams, or until I perfect my time machine.

A LEISURELY DRIVE INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE

JOHNNY IS NOT LIKE OTHER BOYS

Johnny was kept locked away in the attic.

Johnny was not like other boys.

Johnny could not help how he was as he was born that way.

Johnny did not eat with the rest of the family.

Johnny’s sister never even admitted to dates that Johnny existed.

Johnny would not be understood by most people.

Johnny had become the stuff of legend and late night stories.

Johnny would be labeled a freak and people would run away in terror.

Johnny wanted to come out for Christmas, nonetheless.

How open and understanding are you? Would you invite Johnny over to your house? Would you allow Johnny to date your daughter, even though he is handicapped (okay, challenged) and different?

Could you love Johnny?

Okay, Johnny may not be his real name, but this is one of the most frightening videos I have seen on You-Tube.  Sure, it is likely a hoax, but what if it were not?

Over the years, I have known and cared for a number of people classified as monstrosities.  Even after they pass away, memories of them haunt me.  It is amazing how deformed and sick people can be and still live.  I recall being unable to get volunteers to help me in seeing certain people because their infirmities were so severe and visible.  One young woman with a good heart cried herself sick afterwards.  She wanted to help, but emotionally it was too much for her.  The revulsion was stronger than her good-will and charity.  It may be that the afflicted remind us of our own mortality?

People have worth, even if they are severely retarded and deformed.

Every life is precious and is a divine miracle.

I have to believe that one day God will make all the wrongs right.

The beauty that God sees now, we will also see when it is fully realized.

Is Johnny here a fake…all mouth and teeth…no nose or eyes?  If so that might give some of you consolation and relief.  But I have known flesh-and-blood boys and girls who looked as bad or worse.  I recall my little Mikey with a cleft-face, literally pins holding up his eyes and an empty cavity where a face and mouth should be.  The doctors thought he was retarded and he was institutionalized.  Later we found out that the defect impaired his speech, not his mind.  God bless him.
