I’ve had a question for a long time that I haven’t really had the courage to ask, but here goes…

In Matthew 26:27, after Jesus took the cup and gave thanks, He said, “Drink from it all of you.” So many places in scripture Jesus tells us He is the bread of life, so why, if He says ALL of you, was it later determined that only those believing in the Real Presence should “drink from the cup?”

Maybe I’m wrong (would hardly be the first time), but it seems that those who came after Jesus took His words to be applied to Catholics only. I am Catholic, and I’ve read scripture that talks about the need to “believe to receive,” but I don’t understand the origins of that thinking.

I ask b/c my mom sometimes comes to Mass w/me and goes up to receive, when I know (and do tell her) she isn’t acting in accordance w/the Church’s teaches. She, however, responds that she is acting in response to Jesus’

Please help me understand.

FATHER JOE: The apostles at the Last Supper become priests at the Last Supper. They are “all” the nucleus of the Catholic Church. He tells them that this is his body and blood. Given that they now understand, they take the bread and the cup. These men had lived and labored with Christ for three years. They knew him. Those who know neither Christ nor his Church are not invited to receive.

Father Joe — are you alright? I’ve missed your commentary. There are so many things you could write about. The new Pew Poll, Obama, the new ambassador to the Vatican, Obama, PP giving Tiller an award last weekend…

FATHER JOE: Parish and other ministerial obligations have been pressing. On top of this have been some health concerns and I have been warned to try to avoid unnecessary stress. I get some difficult comments for response and even threatening emails from people unhappy with the blog. Tuesday I am going to John Hopkins in Baltimore for a C-T Scan. Prayers would be appreciated. Threatening emails? That’s awful! I’ve seen some commentary that sounds as if another might not be terribly stable. I’m sad that has caused you discomfort. For what it’s worth, many of your posts helped me very much. I prayed for your scan and hope things with you are well. God Bless
