I am slowly deciphering some of the written materials left by the late Msgr. William J. Awalt. For review and comments, they are being posted at my BLOGGER PRIEST site.

http://bloggerpriest.com/category/awalt-papers/

Msgr. Awalt was the pastor of St. Ann’s Church in NW Washington , DC for just over 30 years, retiring in the year 2000. I was honored to preach at the Mass celebrating his 60th anniversary as a priest in 2007. His pastorate was marked by a deep devotion to the Eucharist and a never-ending preoccupation with preaching the Gospel and teaching the Catholic faith.

cartoonkennedyNARAL had awarded the Massachusetts senator a 100% approval rating.

He was the Catholic voice for the culture of death for a quarter of a century, supporting not only abortion but partial birth infanticide, the use of embryonic human beings for research, and same sex unions for homosexuals and lesbians. He also championed repression against free speech and religious liberties (at least for conservative, orthodox or biblical churches) by expanding “hate crimes” legislation to include criticism of gays.

He was also responsible for the increased politicization of the Supreme Court by his pro-abortion litmus test against the nomination of Judge Robert Bork, a strict-constructionist, in 1987.  Judge Bork came into the Catholic Church a few years ago.

At the time of his death, Senator Kennedy was advocating health care reform that would guarantee federal money for artificial contraception and abortions.

While many acclaimed him as a hero for women and the poor. Many pro-lifers regarded him as one of the nation’s chief enemies of motherhood and the poorest of the poor, innocent and voiceless children in the womb.

His was a life of many personal scandals and a general lack of discretion. However, I have no desire to enumerate upon those things in his personal life which are already public knowledge. Our reaction now should be one of prayer for a man who was baptized and raised as a Catholic. God will be his judge, even as we continue to repair the damage that he did to the witness of the Church and the moral standing of our nation. Indeed, for all we know, God’s grace might have brought him to repentance and conversion in the last moments of life.

Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Rights Action League, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered groups are certainly weeping the loss of one of their great defenders and proponents. It is too bad that they neither weep for the murdered children nor about the decomposition of morals and marriage.

It is also said that Ted Kennedy was a pivotal figure in the transformation of the Democratic Party and its agenda, making possible the Obama presidency. He certainly made his impact felt upon history. Now, the final chapter is closed. He passed away from his brain cancer on Tuesday night in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. First Joseph, then John, next Robert and now Teddy— the last of the Kennedy brothers has gone to God.

Rest in peace.

THIS FROM LIFESITE NEWS: (July 16, 2009)

Dr. Joseph Kerwin, the first American doctor in outer space, joined other former NASA greats – including retired astronaut Dr. Bill Thornton and Mr. Gene Kranz, the Flight Director at Mission Control during the Apollo program, including the famous Apollo 13 mission – on Monday at a press conference in Houston to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11’s historic landing on the moon and to launch the new ad by CatholicVote.org.

The new ad opens up with a detailed 3D ultrasound of an unborn baby, and the words “At 5 weeks his heart will beat.” The ad continues, “At 9 weeks his feet will form,” and “At 80 weeks he will take his first step.” The ad concludes with famous footage of Neil Armstrong taking his first steps on the moon and the words “at 2024 weeks…”. The final shot shows a footprint on the moon and the “Imagine” slogan.

Both during election time and outside, many pro-lifers and good Catholics feel that it is scandalous for pro-abortion politicians and politicians to receive communion. Several bishops feel the same way and even refuse the sacrament. Others have tried to dialogue with these figures, asking that they either accept the Gospel of Life or personally refrain from taking the Eucharist. The American Life League has been especially vocal in urging American bishops to establish a unified policy to prevent such blasphemy.

Catholic Answers, an apologetics organization, distributed an e-letter in 2004 arguing that Senator John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for the presidency, should not be permitted to receive Holy Communion. Senator Kerry had publicly dissented on Church teaching and was avidly pro-abortion. The concern of many was his poor witness to others that such dissent was acceptable for Catholics.

The Church has a right to protect both the faith of her people and to regulate the sacraments in such a way that both honors God and protects the Eucharist from defamation. The reception of the sacrament by those who are not properly disposed constitutes the grave sin of sacrilege. While there might be public consequences, this was really an internal debate and subject for the Catholic Church. Catholics can and do vote for non-Catholics and fallen-away Catholics. If politicians or media celebrities should be deemed bad Catholics, that in itself does not mean the people in the pews would not vote for them or see their movies or listen to their music.

irs2

Catholic Answers, a group dedicated to defending and explaining Catholic teaching, was fined by the Internal Revenue Service for their e-letter. It is contended that the group CATHOLICS FOR A FREE CHOICE under Francis Kissling had a hand in it. Some say that there are still many in the IRS from the Clinton years when so-called “right-wing” groups were regularly targeted.

Karl Keating of Catholic Answers said that Kissing also hated their VOTER’S GUIDE FOR SERIOUS CATHOLICS. It sought to educate Catholics about the importance of abortion; however, it did NOT mention any political parties or candidates by name. The guide was cleared of any IRS violations.

Given the fine for the e-letter, Catholic Answers is suing the IRS. They are claiming that the IRS has “intimidated” churches and non-profit groups into silence on certain controversial moral issues. This is actually the case and the reason why there is so much silence from the pulpits. Bishops are afraid and they have transferred this anxiety to their priests with very restrictive policies about what can and cannot be said.

The Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.

President of University of Notre Dame

Dear Father Jenkins,

When you informed me in December 2008 that I had been selected to receive Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal, I was profoundly moved. I treasure the memory of receiving an honorary degree from Notre Dame in 1996, and I have always felt honored that the commencement speech I gave that year was included in the anthology of Notre Dame’s most memorable commencement speeches. So I immediately began working on an acceptance speech that I hoped would be worthy of the occasion, of the honor of the medal, and of your students and faculty.

Last month, when you called to tell me that the commencement speech was to be given by President Obama, I mentioned to you that I would have to rewrite my speech. Over the ensuing weeks, the task that once seemed so delightful has been complicated by a number of factors.

First, as a longtime consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree. This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops’ express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions “should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles” and that such persons “should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” That request, which in no way seeks to control or interfere with an institution’s freedom to invite and engage in serious debate with whomever it wishes, seems to me so reasonable that I am at a loss to understand why a Catholic university should disrespect it.

Then I learned that “talking points” issued by Notre Dame in response to widespread criticism of its decision included two statements implying that my acceptance speech would somehow balance the event:

  • “President Obama won’t be doing all the talking. Mary Ann Glendon, the former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, will be speaking as the recipient of the Laetare Medal.”
  • “We think having the president come to Notre Dame, see our graduates, meet our leaders, and hear a talk from Mary Ann Glendon is a good thing for the president and for the causes we care about.”

A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.

obama667

Finally, with recent news reports that other Catholic schools are similarly choosing to disregard the bishops’ guidelines, I am concerned that Notre Dame’s example could have an unfortunate ripple effect.

It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.

In order to avoid the inevitable speculation about the reasons for my decision, I will release this letter to the press, but I do not plan to make any further comment on the matter at this time.

Yours Very Truly,

Mary Ann Glendon

Do we see here the latest faces of evil?  While a certain anti-Catholicism has long been fashionable in the U.S., these bigots pull no punches in attacking the divinely instituted hierarchical structure of the Catholic Church:  Rep. Michael Lawlor and Sen. Andrew McDonald of Connecticut.  Why?  It is because these gay men hate the Church for her position against same-sex civil unions.  More about this below.

DIOCESE OF BRIDGEPORT VERSUS CONNECTICUT LEGISLATORS

Watch the video with Bishop William Lori where he warns of the crisis.

TEXT OF RAISED BILL IN JUDICIARY COMMITTEE #1098

A Bill that would strip Bishops of their authority over parishes!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ALERT!!!

Catholics must stand together against this attack upon the nature of the Church!

loritroubleThe latest and most intrusive step so far against the Catholic Church is in Connecticut. True Catholics must pray and support the Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Bishop Bill Lori, formerly a priest of my diocese, Washington, DC, is headed for the fight of his life. What happens there will have repercussions for the Church throughout the entire nation.  Fortunately, he is up to the fight and is also Supreme Chaplain to the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS.

This is not Red China with its puppet “patriotic” Catholic Church; but that is precisely what certain legislators in Connecticut must think. A bill has been put forward that would directly interfere with the internal activities and structure of the Catholic Church. Other churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples are ignored; the Catholic Church alone (at least for now) has been targeted by name. Bill 1098 would strip Catholic bishops of their direct oversight over their parishes. The state would force the bishops to hand their jurisdiction to an elected board of directors. Clergy would not be allowed on this board, only laymen and laywomen. The bishop or his representative could sit with the 7 to 13 members, but he would have NO VOTE.

The overall authority of bishops over their priests and congregations comes from the apostles and the charge given them by Jesus. This legislation rejects the Catholic stance and forces a reformed Protestant form of government upon the Catholic Church. The Church rejected boards of controlling trustees over parishes after the Revolutionary War. Only the Protestant reformers, and not all of them, suggested that the bishops be stripped of their authority. Such a measure would reduce bishops to figureheads, good for periodic Confirmations but nothing more. Pastors would be hired, fired and treated as employees by these boards.  Pastors would no longer be true pastors at all.  I am sure the Vatican would never have any of it. But what would happen then, a forced schism where the legitimate bishops would govern from exile and their priests minister under tents while the state flunkies took over Church properties and changed policies? Such a view by which the laity rules the Church has been condemned as heretical by the Magisterium. We each have our role to play and the bishops should not be stripped of theirs. How could anyone in government dare think they could rewrite the system of governance for the Catholic Church? This is an obscenity to the freedom of religion!

The diocese of Bridgeport has explained the situation as follows:

“This past Thursday, March 5, the Judiciary Committee of the Connecticut State Legislature, which is chaired by Sen. Andrew McDonald of Stamford and Rep. Michael Lawlor of East Haven, introduced a bill that directly attacks the Roman Catholic Church and our Faith.

This bill violates the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. It forces a radical reorganization of the legal, financial, and administrative structure of our parishes. This is contrary to the Apostolic nature of the Catholic Church because it disconnects parishes from their Pastors and their Bishop. Parishes would be run by boards from which Pastors and the Bishop would be effectively excluded.

This bill, moreover, is a thinly-veiled attempt to silence the Catholic Church on the important issues of the day, such as same-sex marriage.

The State has no right to interfere in the internal affairs and structure of the Catholic Church. This bill is directed only at the Catholic Church but could someday be forced on other denominations. The State has no business controlling religion.

The Pastors of our Diocese are doing an exemplary job of sound stewardship and financial accountability, in full cooperation with their parishioners.

For the State Legislature — which has not reversed a $1 billion deficit in this fiscal year — to try to manage the Catholic Church makes no sense. The Catholic Church not only lives within her means but stretches her resources to provide more social, charitable, and educational services than any other private institution in the State. This bill threatens those services at a time when the State is cutting services. The Catholic Church is needed now more than ever.

We reject this irrational, unlawful, and bigoted bill that jeopardizes the religious liberty of our Church. We urge you to call and e-mail Sen. McDonald and Rep. Lawlor:

Senator Andrew McDonald:
Capitol phone: (800) 842-1420; Home phone: (203) 348-7439
E-mail: McDonald@senatedems.ct.gov

Representative Michael Lawlor:
Capitol phone: (800) 842-8267; Home phone: (203) 469-9725
E-mail: MLawlor99@juno.com

We also ask you to come to Hartford this Wednesday, March 11, to be present at the public hearing. Details on bus transportation will be available on Monday. If you would like to attend, contact your Pastor.

It is up to us to stop this unbridled abuse of governmental power.

It is time for us to defend our First Amendment rights.
It is time for us to defend our Church!”

The First Amendment to the US Constitution is found in what is properly called the “Bill of Rights”. It contains these clear words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

This bill violates the rights of the Catholic Church and the faith of her good people. It is also unconstitutional and we can only hope that good sense prevails. But, even if we win this one; what about the next attack or the one after that? The Church has a hierarchical structure that comes down to us from Christ’s institution. This legislation is anti-Catholic bigotry at its best. Note that we alone are singled-out for such treatment. It is to be forced upon us because the Church refuses to be silent about such evils as same-sex unions and abortion. Do not think for one moment that these boards would be composed of good practicing Catholics who kiss the hands of their priest each Sunday. No, these would be the dissenters taking charge.

No doubt the scandal of a few bad priests and allegations of abuse weighs in the background for many people, but the rationale given here is that the bishops and Church cannot manage their own financial house.  Bishop Lori rightly finds this reasoning quite fantastic, given their high degree of accountability and good management.  By contrast, the State of Connecticut cannot close a one billion dollar deficit and the full story will never be told upon the government waste and corruption.  The real reason for this Bill is hatred of the Catholic Church and resentment about the tough moral stands she has taken.  It is no accident that the day before it was submitted, the same-sex marriage Bill was to be heard.  This Bill which focuses on the juridical structure of the Catholic Church is only a thinly veiled attempt to silence our voice.  Note that other churches are not targeted for such take-over.  The two main proponents are radically involved with the homosexual agenda and hate the Church for refusing to pander to perversity.  There can be no doubt, these men are out to destroy the Catholic Church as we know her.

Imagine for a moment what these boards might quickly put on the agenda if they should take charge:

  1. Their first objective would be achieved:  approval of same-sex couples, blessings over them and wedding ceremonies.
  2. Next would come condom and pill distribution from Catholic Charities and training sessions for CCD kids and parish youth groups.
  3. Parish pro-life groups would be disowned and replaced with Planned Parenthood or NARAL promoters.
  4. Married priests would be invited back, especially after orthodox celibates are fired.
  5. In short order, women would be ordained and received as priests in the parishes.
  6. Divorce and remarriage would be permitted.
  7. The protestant “open” communion table would be established, welcoming everyone  for communion, even your Buddhist friends.
  8. ACT-UP and Dignity would operate so-called gay-friendly activities using parish funds and property.
  9. The face of Jesus in churches would be refashioned to look like Obama— all hail the Messiah! (Who knows?)

MIKE LAWLOR ATTACKS CATHOLICISM AT GAY MARRIAGE HEARING:

The late Pope John Paul II told the young people at World Youth Day that they had to remain strong in the faith. He prophesied that many of them would face great persecution and maybe even suffer martyrdom. While he worked for a better tomorrow and reconciliation with groups which had historic grievances with Catholicism; nevertheless, when asked about the future he said he had a vision of BLOOD.

Many people assert that here in America we are safe to worship as we please. However, religion is about more than ritual, it is also about ideas and activism. Already there are politicians and organizations who oppose basic ideas and activities which touch core tenets of Catholicism. The question of the war aside, the Bush Administration was a momentary respite, an oasis in a storm that was looming ever closer and closer. Now that Obama is president, I suspect we shall find the ark of Peter frequently assailed and with few earthly friends to lend assistance. Catholics in the pews have grown timid to defend and help. They must be awakened from their moral slumber. As in many nations, certain Catholics have become the Church’s worst enemies. Even here in the United States, many Catholic pro-abortion politicians in the House of Representatives, the Senate and in the Executive branch oppose the Church’s efforts for the Gospel of Life. State governments are also turning against us. Many of these efforts are fueled by the big money that organizations like Planned Parenthood can muster. Add to this the general enmity that the ACLU and other such entities have against us, and well, this fight is going to have casualties.

Pretty much every year there is an effort here in Maryland to force Catholic hospitals to do abortion referrals and to distribute contraception, even if abortifacient. So far we have been on the winning side, but for how much longer? Maryland bishops have said they would close the hospitals before allowing any collaboration in murder and sin. The Church in Los Angeles took heat about their insurance plans for employees and was pressured to add same-sex partners to the mix. There is also growing insistence that artificial contraception be included in health plans, despite the Church’s view that such practices constitute mortal sin. The Church in Boston had to shut down their adoption program operated through Catholic Charities because the authorities insisted that they would also have to adopt children out to homosexual couples. No one thought the Archbishop would take such a step, but he had the courage to make the right move.  The new president has made no secret that he opposes any “conscience clause” for doctors, nurses and pharmacists who want nothing to do with abortion, embryonic destruction and artificial contraception.  Stripped of legal protection, many pro-life professionals and Catholics will have their licenses stripped and be removed from their jobs.

Refusing to speak to pro-life advocates in today’s March for Life, Obama made a statement that reiterated his support for Roe V. Wade: “We are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.”

obamababy2

It is suspected that President Obama will soon issue an executive order  reversing the Bush administration policy that bans the use of federal dollars by non-govermental organizations that discuss or provide abortions outside of the United States. It was thought that Obama would sign the executive order on the 36th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states.

Some of us are going to really miss President George W. Bush.

SK George L. Chapman, Jr., PFN passed away peacefully at his home in Laurel, MD, on Friday, January 9, 2009. With his passing I feel free to tell you an incredible story that many did not know about George. Back in the late 1940’s there was another boy, only thirteen years old, who had been introduced to the occult and who suffered a spiritual invasion through his aunt’s Ouija board. Seemingly on their own, objects moved around, furniture fell over, and “his desk at school moved about on the floor similar to the plate on an Ouija board.” This latter evidence of telekinesis forced the boy to quit school because of embarrassment. Things got even worse at home. Not yet Catholics, they called their Lutheran minister but he found the situation uncontrollable. Any chair in which they placed the boy tipped over. Resting him on a floor rug, it moved on the wood floor entirely on its own.

Having a relative married to a Catholic, the boy’s mother described the situation to him. His response was “If what you say is true, then you should consult a priest.” The family called the nearby parish, St. James Catholic Church. The boy’s father made an appointment to talk to one of the priests. The clergyman gave him various sacramentals: holy water, blessed candles, and some recommended prayers. “Once when the mother had sprinkled the holy water around the room, she placed the bottle on a dresser and it was picked up by the spirit and smashed. When one of the candles was lighted, the flame shot up to the ceiling, and the candle was extinguished for fear that the house might be set on fire.” The suggested prayers seemed to make the phenomena worse. Deciding to call back the priest, the clergyman heard a great crashing sound. The mother of the boy told him that the telephone table she was using had broken into a hundred pieces.

This anxious situation refused to end and matters grew tenser. The priest, Fr. E. Albert Hughes, went to the chancellor of the archdiocese. He was warned to move slowly and not to leap to rash judgments. The young priest explained that he had done as much. After a meeting with the archbishop, Most Reverend Patrick A. O’Boyle, he was authorized to initiate the exorcisms. Fr. Hughes resisted, hoping that an older and more experienced man might be chosen instead. He “understood that this should be done by a very holy man because the devil is wont to expose the sins of the priest; so the Father went to Baltimore and made a general confession. But the devil is the father of lies, and there is a theological opinion that he is unable to reveal sins that have been forgiven.”

The archbishop insisted. The young priest had to offer the ritual. It would prove a terrible miscalculation. Between February 27 and March 4, 1949, the boy was moved to Georgetown University Hospital. A young man and altar server (George L. Chapman, Jr.) who was known for his abilities in high school football was drafted by the priest to assist him. Side-by-side with his priest, George would look straight into the devil’s face! He told me that he had a terrible struggle to hold the possessed boy down; that he could spit across the room with deadly accuracy. Indeed, the spittle would fly around the book and still hit the priest in the face. The ritual book dissolved somewhat from the fluids expelled. At one point George lost his patience and even slugged the other boy to keep him under control. He saw himself as the popular priest’s body guard. The priest made him go to confession and pledged him not to tell his mother and friends at that time the details of the encounters. They tied the hands and feet of the boy to the bedposts. He reacted violently to the ritual. Loose items in the room crashed to the floor. The bed shook uncontrollably. Strenuously the large server sought to hold the bed down. The victim was a small boy and yet he possessed incredible strength. The priest warned his young assistant not to enter into dialogue with the boy, only to give the required responses to the ritual words of the priest. Strange words came forth from the restrained boy, supposedly Aramaic, a form of ancient Hebrew. Previously the boy had taunted the priest in Latin. Objects were thrown around the room. The boy growled like an inhuman animal. Then it happened. Somehow the boy had gotten a hand free of the restraints. He secretly tore through the heavy mattress and ripped out a metal spring. The server responded to the words uttered by Fr. Hughes in the ritual. At the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer, the possessed boy attacked the priest and tore a gash into the cleric’s arm from his shoulder to his wrist. Blood exploded over everything! The ritual prayer book was caked in the priest’s blood! He screamed out! George tried to restrain the demoniac and was hit hard in the eye. The exorcism had ended in failure. The priest’s life was saved by the efforts of his server and the quick actions by the doctors; his arm ended up with a long track of a hundred plus stitches. He would have lingering problems with the arm and it would visibly drag at the consecration during Masses.

As an interesting aside, the young server in this episode having been struck in the eye by the afflicted boy, would develop a black eye and it was joked that maybe the priest had socked him. When the priest mysteriously left the parish, only he knew the true reason. The good priest would need to recuperate from his terrible encounter and injury. After this event, colleagues of the priest said that Fr. Hughes was never quite the same. He became quieter. He was intensely reserved about what had happened. One remarked that it was as if he was a haunted man. He died in 1980. Now his faithful server has joined him in eternity. Other exorcists would finish the exorcisms in St. Louis and the demoniac would eventually be freed of his infirmity.

A few days ago an obituary matter-of-factly announced the death of SK George L. Chapman, Jr., PFN. Many of our members are new Knights and would not know him. His death notice noted that he was “a devoted father of Brian (Karen) Chapman and Michael Chapman and is also survived by two grandchildren, Cody and Corine; brothers, Francis and Paul; sisters, Geraldine Daily, Eileen Issing, Regina Shouse, and Claire Rollins; and numerous nieces and nephews.” Yes, he was a good family man and like all the rest of us mortal. But, he was also a faithful Catholic who trusted the promises of Jesus his Savior. Working to the very end, he was serving as Lecturer this fraternal year for P.G. Council 2809.

I felt his passing very personally and lamented that I could not make his funeral. We lost a great Knight of Columbus, a Catholic gentleman who epitomized everything a Knight should be. George played a part in the degrees that first brought me into the Knights of Columbus over 20 years ago. I can recall his strong and dramatic voice and the way he moved in his ceremonial robes. The candidates were mesmerized by every word he spoke, not just memorized, but words that had melded as part of him. Over the years, I would repeatedly run into him at the various functions of our order. Always busy, he even acted as a host for informational video presentations sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. You may have seen some of them on cable. A few of them are available on YouTube. Just as his dear priest friend once used the words of the ritual against Satan, George never forgot the power of words and used his gifted voice to inspire faith and service in other Catholic men, particularly his beloved Knights of Columbus.

Rest in Peace!
